First Big Storm of the year in VT brings great opportunities

At long last the first big snow storm of 2012 has come and gone leaving most of VT blanketed a much needed coating of white.  The arrival of snow in the north country is welcomed by many and cursed by others, however you cannot discount the great benefits both for the economy of the region and the psyche of Vermonters who love to spend time outside in winter.  Many folks who visit our site and read our blog are hunters, however I am one who also believes that we are all NOT JUST HUNTERS.  Many of us snowshoe, ski, ice fish, snowmobile, hike, ice climb and yes even winter camp.  All of these activities and many more require or are infinitely more enjoyable when there is snow on the ground.

Even the nature photographers, sketchers and painters, both professional and amature alike, find the arrival of snow a fantastic opportunity for one of a kind pictures of the beauty of Vermont.  The state in which we are so blessed to live is maginficent in winter and any opportunity to enjoy its beauty and splendor should not be missed or taken for granted.

Winter in Vermont is not for the faint of heart.  It is by no means the northern tundra of Alaska or Canada, however when taken lightly it can be no less unforiving.  Driving can be hazardous, shoveling mountains of snow can exhausting and lets face it...not fun at all.  However these are momentary spaces in time which are surrounded by the greatness of what we are blessed with.  So this winter, get outside, grab your skis and hit the sloaps, gas up your sled and enjoy the hunreds of miles of the VAST Trail system throughout VT, or pick up some bait at your favorite shop and when the ice is ready, spend a little time on the stiff water pulling up Northerns.

If you are looking for dare I say a FREE something to do with your family and friends, there are endless acres of woods and mountains just waiting to greet you on your snowshoes, and it is a great opportunity for a little late season scouting and shed hunting.  Remember your camera though, views of VT in Winter can take your breath away.

Enjoy every minute of this great season, and remember to share it with someone, take a kid with you.  They will nevery forget it.
